The World Chess Championship 2024 is set to take place between November 25 and December 13, 2024, in Singapore. The chess table crafted for the FIDE World Championship, presented by Google, in Singapore! Made by local company Roger&Sons, this table features Khaya and Angsana wood sourced sustainably. Ryan Yeo, operations director at Roger&Sons, emphasized the importance of sustainability in their design process: “We want to move away from a throw-away culture. This table is meant to be reused for future events, showcasing innovative local craftsmanship.” The unique design not only highlights Singapore’s dedication to eco-friendly practices but also repurposes non-native trees, addressing environmental concerns.

“We’ve been through a couple of projects with tight deadlines, but something as prestigious as a world championship is something new to us and we are very honored to have this opportunity.” The wood used in furniture making usually requires months for it to be dry after being sourced from trees, but the company had to expedite this process, using a kiln to reduce the waiting time to six weeks. The wood used is sourced locally – the majority of the table is made of Khaya wood (African mahogany) and accented with Angsana wood. “There will be two main materials, one is African mahogany and the other is Angsana,” added Yeo.
