The 9th Mediterranean Men & Women’s Chess Championships 2014 will be held from 2-10th September at the Atlantica Caldera Creta Paradise Hotel in Chania, Crete, Greece.
The tournament is being sponsored by Kydon Sports Club and Krommydakis Group of Companies, and co-organized by Mediterranean Chess Association, Region of Crete and Municipality of Platanias.
Participants:
One player each for Men and Women Championships nominated by each Mediterranean Federation as listed in the MCA statute. If a Federation wishes to have additional players participating, besides those qualified through the normal way and by right, it should apply to the Organizing Committee.
System and rate of play:
Boys and girls will participate in one joint tournament. This will give more opportunity for rating and norms. The Championships are organized as per the FIDE Rules in the FIDE Handbook. The events will be conducted according to the Swiss System, 9 rounds. The time limit will be 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move for each player. The games will be played using DGT clocks.
Registration:
The Registration Form/s shall be submitted to the General Secretary of the Mediterranean Chess Association by e-mail (geoffrey.borg@gmail.com) and to the Tournament Director (skouvatsos11@gmail.com) by not later than 30th July 2014. If participants submit the registration form after the deadline they may have to pay for their accommodation or even be refused entry.
Traveling Expenses and Airport Transfers:
Traveling expenses shall be covered by the participating Federations. Transportation from the Chania International Airport in Crete to the hotel and back will be managed by organizers for free.
Extra players and accompanying persons, transportation fee 20€ (from the Chania International Airport in Crete to the hotel and back).
Players and accompanying persons that will arrive to Heraklion international airport in Crete (156km away from Chania) will take care about their own transfer from the airport to hotel.
Accommodation:
The invited participants, a man and a woman identified by each federation will be hosted by the organizers with free accommodation (full board) in double or triple rooms hotel organizing the tournament. Any additional participant or accompanying person will have to pay for all their expenses in Chania-Crete.

The Championship winners will be awarded trophies and Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals respectively. The organisers are also please to announce cash prizes as follows :
The Prizes for Men: 1st. 1500€ 2nd. 1000€ 3rd. 500€
The Prizes for Women: 1st. 750€ 2nd. 500€ 3rd. 250€
Cash prizes will be split equally if there is more than one player qualifying for the cash prize. Women players who may rank in the first overall three places will be given a choice as to which prize and trophy they may wish, but no person may win more than one respective prize & trophy.
