The 2022 FISU World University Chess Championship was played from 12-17 September at the University of Antwerp Hof van Liere, Belgium. The event was played in Open and Women’s sections separately, with participation of around 70 players from 15 countries. The participants competed in classical and blitz tournament, and the best teams were announced combining results of the best federation’s players in the two events.
FM Arash Daghli won the classical event in the Open section as he scored unbeaten 7/9 points. Four players tied for the second place with tiebreak criteria determining the medalists. GM Igor Janik clinched silver, GM Jingyao Tin was bronze, IM Mahdi Gholami Orimi came fourth and IM Yovann Gatineau finished the event in the 5th place. WIM Fiona Sieber won the Women’s classical event with the score of 6.5/9 points. Sieber was half a point ahead of the group of five players who tied for the second place. FM Anastasia Avramidou had best tiebreaks criteria to win silver medal, WIM Anna Kubicka claimed bronze, WIM Julianna Terbe was fourth, WFM Katarzyna Dwilewicz was fifth and WGM Julia Antolak came sixth. After nine played rounds, two players tied for the top in the Blitz Open tournament. GM Yingyao Tin had better tiebreaks and clinched gold, while GM Igor Janik won silver. FM Arash Daghli and IM Dimitris Alexakis tied for the third place, with tiebreak criteria favoring FM Arash Daghli who came bronze. Scroll down for final rankings

WIM Alicja Sliwicka clinched the Women’s Blitz event scoring 6.5 points to be the sole Winner of the tournament. Five players tied for the second players with tiebreak criteria favored WFM Honorata Kucharska and WIM Mobina Alinasab who won silver and bronze medals (respectively). WIM Julianna Terbe was fourth, FM Anastasia Avramidou came fifth, and WFM Katarzyna Dwilewicz finished sixth.

Combining the results of the three best players in the Women’s and Open’s classical events, the team of Iran was the best FISU World University Team with score of 19 points. Poland was second with 18.5 points, and Germany came third with 17 points.
According to combined results of the three best players of Blitz tournaments, Poland clinched gold as the best Team with 20 points, Iran came second with 18.5 points, while France won bronze with 15 points. Scroll down for final rankings
