By this time tomorrow, we would have concluded the opening ceremony of the World Chess Championship. Initially catering for 300 for this closed door, invite-only event, we now expect over 400 people to show up at the Capitol Theatre due to the overwhelming requests.

I speak on behalf of the Singapore Chess Federation that we are super grateful of the support from my organising committee, the warm partnership from my government, and the energetic efforts from FIDE. Everyone has worked tirelessly and selflessly to provide the best spectacle possible for the chess community in Singapore and abroad.

What we have tried our best to do is to include a local and regional flavor as much as we can, respecting legends of the past who have given so much to chess in this part of the world. India’s Vishy Anand is undoubtedly the biggest name from Asia but many should familiarise themselves with Grandmaster Xie Jun, China’s first Women’s World Chess Champion and Eugene Torre – Asia’s first ever Chess Grandmaster. Singapore’s first International Master, IM Tan Lian Ann, once Asia’s number 2 will also be in attendance.

Some days of the match such as games 1 and 5 have been completely sold out and we are working to increase the capacity of the playing hall to allow more people to come and enjoy the experience with us. At the end of the day, this match is still all about the 2 players.

Ding and Gukesh have both arrived safely in Singapore. They seem happy enough (hopefully!) and amidst all the distractions will certainly want to do themselves proud. All the best to them.
