The 2026 Sinquefield Cup, the signature classical event of the Grand Chess Tour, begins in St. Louis on August 8, bringing together ten of the world’s strongest grandmasters for the final regular-season tournament of the 2026 GCT. The event runs through August 21, with tournament play scheduled for August 10–19.
The top seed is Fabiano Caruana, rated 2792 on the August 2026 FIDE rating list. The American is a two-time Grand Chess Tour champion, winning the overall title in 2023 and 2025, and enters the Sinquefield Cup as the current leader of the 2026 GCT standings. Caruana will face a particularly strong challenge from Javokhir Sindarov, rated 2777. The Uzbek grandmaster is the reigning FIDE World Cup champion and 2026 Candidates Tournament winner. Germany’s Vincent Keymer is the third seed at 2767. Keymer has enjoyed an outstanding 2026 season and won the Super Chess Classic Romania earlier in the year. He also sits near the top of the overall GCT standings. Former Sinquefield Cup champion Wesley So returns to defend his title. So won the 2025 edition after defeating Praggnanandhaa and Caruana in a three-player blitz playoff following a three-way tie on 5.5/9.
