Sohum Lohia earns his final IM norm

Sohum Lohia is a 15-year-old chess prodigy from England. At the Grandmaster group of the Southend Easter Chess Festival 2025 Sohum Lohia finished with a bronze medal, added 15,3 elo points, and most importantly earned his final IM norm.

Pawel Teclaf wins Southend Chess Masters 2025

The Southend Chess Festival 2025 took place 18-21 April in Southend, England. It included a GM round robin, an IM round robin, an open group, U1900, U1600, and U1300.

The winner of the Southend Chess Masters Grandmaster group is GM Pawel Teclaf with 6,5/9. FM Alex Golding finished second with 6,0/5, while FM Sohum Lohia received the bronze, edging GM Vojtech Plat and GM Igor Janik, who all finished with 5,5/9. Alex Golding and Sohum Lohia both won IM norms.

Jose Camacho-Collados is Welsh Chess Champion 2025

Jose Camacho-Collados won the 2025 edition of the Welsh Chess Championship. He won the title achieving an impressive 6.5/7 score at the Welsh Chess Union (WCU) Championships. The silver medal is for Iwan Cave (who also became Welsh U21 champion) with 6,0/7, while the bronze is for FM Grzegorz Toczek with 5,0/7. The Welsh Ladies champion is Emma Zihan Kong, who finished with 3,5/7.

Duolingo launches a chess course

Duolingo is a free, gamified language-learning app and website that offers courses in over 40 languages, including Spanish, French, German, and even constructed languages like Esperanto and Klingon. Launched in 2011, it uses bite-sized lessons with interactive exercises, such as translation, listening, and speaking tasks, to teach vocabulary and grammar. The app employs a reward system with virtual currency (lingots or gems) and streaks to keep users motivated, while its adaptive algorithm tailors lessons to individual progress.

Volodar Murzin is the winner of Open Internacional Semana Santa

Volodar Murzin is the winner of Open Internacional Semana Santa. Volodar Murzin started as a rating favorite in a field with 27 GMs and 241 titled players and managed to win the title on tiebreak. Murzin finished with 7,5/9, the same points as Shanglei Lu, Vasyl Ivanchuk, and Sethuraman, but had better Buchholz.

Organized by Patricia Claros Aguilar, this was the 9th edition of the Open Internacional Semana Santa and it was a record breaking – with over 700 participants! Six players managed to complete their norms:

Parham Maghsoodloo gets the ticket to Las Vegas Freestyle Chess 2025

Las Vegas Freestyle Chess 2025 is going to take place 15-19 July, 2025. With his second position at Grenke Freestyle (see the final standings here), Parham Maghsoodloo gets the final ticket to Las Vegas 2025. That is yet another fantastic news for Parham Maghsoodloo this month of April, where he won Reykjavik Chess 2025 and finished second in Karlsruhe.

After Carlsen’s Freestyle victory in Paris, now he managed to secure the Grenke Freestyle Chess 2025 title with a round to spare.
