If you thought only chess prodigies become grandmasters these days, you are mistaken. England’s newest chess grandmaster Ameet Ghasi has shown age is no barrier to chess success after qualifying for the title aged 37.

The Marsa Matrouh Chess Open 2024 concluded in victory for FM Ashraf Amin, who scored 7 points in 9 rounds, ahead on tiebreakers of second place IM Walaa Sarwat. IM Sayed Barakat Sahaan placed third with 6.5 points. The top performing woman of the competition was Sama Bakr Saeed, who placed 41st.
