The 18th International Chess Open de Sants, Hostafrancs & La Bordeta is taking place from 19-28th August 2016 at the Auditori del Centre Cívic de les Cotxeres de Sants in Barcelona, Spain.

The tournament format is 10-round Swiss. There are three playing groups: Open A (all players eligible), Open B (U2100) and Open C (U1800). The tournament will be valid for title norms and for FIDE, FEDA and FCE rating.

The Royal Chess Club of Bruges (KBSK) organized the 2016 Brugsemeesters Open tournament from 14-18th August at the KTA in Brugge, Belgium.

The 9-round Swiss event gathered 101 participants.

Russian Grandmaster Vladimir Epishin emerged clear winner with 7,5/9 points, leaving GM Alberto David, IM Awonder Liang and IM Steven Geirnaert half a point behind.

The 9th Annual Cleveland Open was held from August 12-14, 2016, at the Marriott Cleveland Airport, 4277 W 150th Street, Cleveland, Ohio.

The tournament had four sections – Open, U2100, U1700 and U1300. The format was 5-round Swiss with the time control 40/100, SD/30, d10.

The main Open section had 49 players. GM Fidel Corrales Jimenez took the winner’s trophy with perfect 5,0/5 score to claim the top prize of 2100 USD.

Stockfish continues to amaze at Stage 3 of the Top Chess Engine Championship. After 31 rounds Stockfish is the absolute leader in the standings with 21,5/31, 2,5 points (!!) ahead of the closest competitor.

The 2016 Riga Technical University Open was organized by the Latvian Chess Federation and Riga Technical University from 8-14th August at the International Exhibition Centre “Kipsala” in Riga, Latvia.

The Festival consisted of five tournaments: Grandmaster Open A, Baltic Law Offices Open B (9 rounds, for players rated U2300), Weekend Amateur Open C (7 rounds, U2200), Weekend Amateur Open D (U1800), and Blitz Open E.

From 18 to 23 July 2016 a FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar was organized in Kampala, Uganda, by the Uganda Chess Federation, in cooperation with the Africa Chess Confederation and under the auspices of FIDE.

The lecturer was IA Omar Salama (ISL), FIDE Lecturer and the Assistant Lecturer was IA Stephen Kisuze (UGA).

The lectures were in English language.
