UK Blitz Chess Championships 2024 LIVE

The UK Blitz Championships 2024 will follow the format used in previous years’ events. There will be eight regional one-day qualifier events at locations across the country (scroll down to see the list) starting this Saturday, 21st September.

Top players for the London qualifier include Ameet Ghasi, Eldar Gasanov, Han Yichen, Peter Roberson, Stanley Badacsonyi, Shreyas Royal, Maciej Czopor, etc.

Magnus Carlsen: I would have voted against the Russian/Kyrgyz proposal to lift sanctions on Russia

Upon receiving the award the FIDE 100 award, Magnus Carlsen said, “I still think that Garry Kasparov has had a better chess career than I have. I understand why I got this award, but he was more deserving. I would say, at least in Garry’s [Kasparov’s] honor, I am sure that he would take the opportunity to advice against reinstating the Russian and Belarusian Chess Federations, so that is what I would do as well.”

Chess City in Elista is no more

Chess City is a large complex devoted to chess located east of Elista, Kalmykia, in Russia. The idea and development of Chess City is directly the result of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Kalmykia’s and FIDE’s President. It was built for the 33rd Chess Olympiad and the 69th FIDE Congress. The complex also hosted other major FIDE tournaments, including the 2004 Women’s World Chess Championship and the 2006 World Chess Championship.

Statement by ECU: We demand the Russian Chess Federation to cease any operations in Ukrainian territory

Yesterday the FIDE Council rejected The Russian / Kyrgyz proposal to restore the full rights of the Russian and Belarus Chess Federations. A different case regarding Russia, which the delegates at Budapest consider the more serious and more damaging to chess, is sanctions against Russia and Belarus for the violation of the sports jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Chess Federation.

International Chess Open Isola del Sole 2024

The International Chess Open Isola del Sole 2024 takes place in Italy from 26 September to 3 October. It is a nine round Swiss event with the participation of GMs Diermair Andreas, Milan Drasko, IMs Nikoloz Petriashvili, Noe Tutisani, FMs Gabriele Lumachi, Irakli Akhvlediani, Claudio Paduano, etc.

Abigail Karyah is on a perfect 7/7 in the Chess Olympiad 2024. 16 year old Abigail Karyah, playing for Liberia, has gained 112 ELO points so far and has earned (at least) the Candidate Master title.

Abigail Karyah is also aiming at the board medal. Currently with 2457 TPR, she is right behind IM Deshmukh Divya, WIM Xeniya Balabayeva, and GM Elina Danielian.
