Who can replace Karjakin for the Candidates Tournament 2022

The FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) has reached a verdict on the case 2/2022, relating to public statements by grandmasters Sergey Karjakin (FIDE ID 14109603). The Russian player is found guilty by the panel and Karjakin is banned for 6 months from FIDE rated competitions, missing the Candidates Chess 2022.

Sergey Karjakin was banned by FIDE for 6 months and will miss the Candidates Chess 2022 (who can substitute Karjakin in the competition here). Sergey Karjakin strongly disagreed with the FIDE’s ban on his official Telegram channel.

The former World Blitz Champion, who is now a university chess coach, scored three wins and a draw to stay unbeaten in the event being held as a fundraiser for UNICEF. The Vietnamese Grandmaster collected 20 points and is four ahead of Magnus Carlsen and the Candidates Chess 2022 participant Jan-Krzystof Duda.
