In Memoriam – GM Arturo Pomar

The Spanish Chess Federation is saddened to inform that the legendary Grandmaster Arturo Pomar Salamanca passed away at the age 84 after a long ilness.

Born in 1931 in Palma de Mallorca, Pomar excelled in chess at the early age and was considered a child prodigy in the 1940s.

At the age of 13 he drew the reigning world champion Alexander Alekhine in a standard game, this still being a record. He was awarded the IM title in 1950 and GM title in 1962.

Social chess project in Stockholm: “Swedish industry meets suburbs”

The Swedish Chess Academy and Swedish Chess Federation will hold the social project “The Swedish industry meets suburbs” on 3rd June in Stockholm.

- “This initiative is an effort of inclusion of ethnic minorities in Sweden through chess”, says GM Pontus Carlsson, the main organizer for the event.

Chess benefits millions because of its widespread appeal to all regardless the social background.

Asian Continental Chess 2016 LIVE!

The Uzbekistan Chess Federation on behalf of Asian Chess Federation and FIDE, invites your Federation to participate in the Asian Continental Chess Championships (Open and Women’s) from 25 May – 5 June 2016 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Each Federation from FIDE Zones 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 and 3.7 can enter one official player in the Open and one official player in the Women’s Division.

The opening ceremony of the 3rd Vugar Gashimov Memorial took place on 25th May in Shamkir, Azerbaijan.

Ontario Open Chess Championship 2016The Ontario Open Championship is an annual chess tournament sanctioned by the Ontario Chess Association and held traditionally over the Victoria Day long weekend by one of its four leagues.

Igor Kurnosov Memorial LIVE!

A rapid tournament dedicated to the memory of GM Igor Kurnosov will be held from 26-28th May at the congress hall of the World Trade Center in Chelyabinsk, Russia.

The stage of the Russian Rapid Grand-Prix is organized by the Russian Chess Federation, Chelyabinsk Chess Federation and Chelyabinsk Sports Ministry.

The tournament format is 11-round Swiss with the time control 15 min + 10 sec. The total prize fund is 450,000 RUB (approx 6000 EUR).

Gashimov Memorial 2016 LIVE!

The 3rd Vugar Gashimov Memorial – Shamkir Chess 2016 will be held from 26th May to 4th June in Shamkir, Azerbaijan. Games will be live with computer analysis by the TCEC engines Komodo, Stockfish and Houdini

European Individual Women Chess 2016 LIVE!

The 17th European Women’s Individual Chess Championship will take place from 26th May to 8th June at the complex Comandor-Amiral in Mamaia, Romania.

The Championship is organized by the Romanian Chess Federation, “Mind Games & Events” Sports Association, under the auspices of European Chess Union.

Catalan Chess Circuit 2016

The Catalan Grand Prix of International Open Chess Tournaments – Catalan Chess Circuit 2016 is a series of international open chess tournaments held from May to September.

The Circuit Català is organized by the Catalan Chess Federation (FCE) and sponsored by the Catalan Sports Council of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The 23 tournaments which count towards the Circuit Català are divided into 12 standard chess events and 11 rapid chess events.

Asian Continental Chess Championships 2016

The 2016 Asian Continental Chess Championships – Open and Women’s – will take place from 25th May to 5th June at the Uzbekistan Hotel in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Eligible to participate are players from FIDE Zones 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 and 3.7.

The tournament will be conducted as a Swiss System competition of 9 rounds and will be played according to FIDE regulations.
