Zhansaya Abdumalik tops FIDE Women’s Grand Prix Gibraltar

After another exciting day’s play and four decisive results, round seven of the Gibraltar leg of the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix at the Caleta Hotel on 29 May 2021 ended with Zhansay Abdumalik of Kazakhstan in the lead on 5½, Mariya Muzychuk in second place on 5, and Kateryna Lagno of Russia and Gunay Mammadzada of Azerbaijan in third on 4½.

Zhansaya Abdumalik (KAZ) and Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) went into the rest day of the Gibraltar leg of the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix as the co-leaders. Zhansaya and Mariya drew their game to move to 4½ out of 6, and are followed by Kateryna Lagno (RUS) on 4.

R2 report – European Hybrid Qualification Chess Tournament

The 2nd stage of the European Hybrid Qualification Tournament for the FIDE World Cup 2021 took place on May 26 and 27.

144 players participated in Round 2, and half of them (72) advanced to the next stage – Round 3. They are just one step away from qualifying for the FIDE World Cup. Round 3 will decide who goes to Sochi and the final Swiss stage will determine the prizes.

An interesting situation arose at the European Hybrid Qualification Tournament in the game between the Israeli chess star GM Boris Gelfand (ISR, 2676) and GM Jergus Pechac (SVK, 2519). After two draws in games with classical time control, the first rapid game ended with the same result. The second rapid game went sharply when Gelfand suffered a mouse-sleep on move 16 and placed the queen on the attacked square, giving it away.

Ahmed Adly – the ElShorbagy of chess wins the African Continental Championship

Just like Mohammed ElShorbagy, Ali Farag, Terek Momen, Marwan Elshorbagy, and Abel Karim Gawad dominate the squash scene, the Egyptian chess players have dominated the  African Individual Chess Championship 2021. At the recently concluded event in Lilongwe all medalists hail from the land of the pharaohs.

Welsh Chess Championships 2021

The Welsh Chess Championships 2021 will be an online event taking place May 28 – June 1. The main event will be the Welsh Online Championships, which is 8 players closed event and a qualifier event for the British Online Championships.

The other two events of the program are Welsh Online Major Open Championships Welsh Online Minor Open Championships.

Live games will be played on Lichess.org and coverage will be available daily on Chessdom.com

African Chess – R7 and R8 report

The African Individual Chess Championship 2021 taking place 17-28 May in Lilongwe, Malawi. The event has reached its final round, that will be played today. A total of four players will qualify directly to the World Chess Cup 2021.

Charlotte Invitational Chess 2021

The Charlotte Invitational Chess 2021 is going to take place 27-31 May. It consists of two round robins valid for FIDE norms.

Charlotte Invitational GM A is a closed ten player event with GM Peter Prohaszka as to seed. 6,5/9 is the needed score for a GM norm and a total of seven players will try to take it. The IM B tournament is also a ten player event. IM Alexander Matros is top seed and the IM norm stands at 7,0/9.
