Grandmaster Ernesto Inarkiev, the reigning European Champion, is elected president of the chess federation in Republic of Ingushetia, a federal subject of Russia.

One of his first projects will be implementation of the program “Chess in Schools”. Inarkiev is the author of the idea of compulsory chess education in the elementary schools. This initiative is supported by the regional Ministry of Education.

The traditional Hastings International Chess Congress took place from 28th December 2016 to 5th January 2017 at the Horntye Sports Centre in Hastings, UK.

The Congress consisted of seven tournaments and the main event was Hastings Masters with 99 participants from 23 countries, including 12 Grandmasters and 14 International Masters.

The 46th Rilton Cup was held from 27th December 2016 to 5th January 2017 at the Clarion Hotel, in Stockholm, Sweden.

The traditional festival consisted of four sections: Rilton Cup, Rilton Elo, Rilton 1800 and Rilton 1600.

The Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival will take place from 23rd January to 2nd February 2017 at Caleta Hotel in Gibraltar.

Ardabil Chess Association under the auspices of the I.R Iran Chess Federation has the hounor of inviting all players of national chess federations to participate in the 25th international Chess festival “Fajr Sabalan Cup” to be organized in Sareyn, Ardabil, Iran from 27th January to 5th February 2017.

The Playing Venue & Official Hotel shall be Qahve Suyi Complex, Sareyn.

Ukrainian GM Adam Tukhaev, rated 2516, became the champion of the 2nd IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Open 2016-17 that came to close at the Mount Litera School International in Mumbai.

The 5th Torneo Internacional de Navidad Ciudad de Lorca took place from 26-30th December, 2016, at the Hotel Jardines de Amaltea in Lorca, Murcia, Spain.

The event was organized by the Club Ajedrez Lorca and completed over 9 rounds of Swiss system.

163 players from 22 federations participated, including 15 Grandmasters and 15 International Masters.

The 35th Annual Empire City Open was held from December 27-29, 2016, at the Hotel Pennsylvania, 401 Seventh Ave, New York.

The event had 7 sections: Open, Under 2100, Under 1900, Under 1700, Under 1500, Under 1300 and Under 1100. The total prize fund was 15,000 USD.

The 26th Annual North American Open was held from 26-30th December, 2016, at Bally’s Casino Resort, 3645 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, Nevada.

The event had 7 sections: Open, Under 2300, Under 2100, Under 1900, Under 1700, Under 1500 and Under 1250.

In a dramatic race of two players who recently contended the World Championship Match in New York, Magnus Carlsen and Sergey Karjakin, the Russian came out on the top to win the gold medal by the virtue of better tiebreak score.

The two players finished on 16,5/21 points each. Just like in the World Rapid Championship Carlsen lost the trophy on additional criteria.
