On a gloomy Sunday, November 27, the chess world was shocked by the tragic death of the Russian young and talented grandmaster Urii Eliseev (1996-2016). But disasters come treading on each other’s heals…

The young Russian Grandmaster Urii Eliseev died in a tragic accident after falling from the 12th floor of apartment building in Moscow.

Born in 1996, Eliseev was U16 Russian and world champion in 2012, winner of the 2013 RSGU Cup and the 2016 Moscow Open.

After two very successful editions, the Etna International Chess Festival returns to Hotel Biancaneve in Nicolosi, on the slopes of the volcano, for the third event that will take place from 3-9th December.

No doubt players and guests will be treated to a memorable chess and tourist experience knowing that the organiser of the highly acclaimed events, Mr Alessandro Monaco, is also taking care of the first edition of this new tournament in co-operation with Mrs. Agata Campisi Marzaduri from the local chess club of Nicolosi.

After the rest day, the players resumed fighting with new energy, but nevertheless the 5th round turned out to be one of the most peaceful affairs so far. Only Nino Batsiashvili and Bela Khotenashvili, who had visited the hockey match on a rest day, were successful today.

Chess as a game may be ancient, but chess teaching is not. Successful chess coaches widely embrace 21st teaching technology to enhance their teaching.

The super-tournament Kortchnoi Zurich Chess Challenge 2017 is scheduled to take place from 12-17th April in Zurich, Switzerland.

The first leg will be all-play-all with the time control 45 min + 30 sec per player. The win will bring 2 points and draw 1 point. The second leg will be with the rapid time control 10 min + 5 sec and the point system is 1 for win, 0,5 for draw.

Spanish coastal city of Fuengirola near Malaga will host the European Universities Bridge and Chess Championships – EUSA mind sports – from September 20-24, 2017.

Preparations are well underway, and the event will be organised in cooperation of European University Sports Association (EUSA) and the local organising committee, with the support of the European Bridge League (EBL) and European Chess Union (ECU), respectively.
