Top-seed Fide Master (FM) Viktor Matviishen of Ukraine and Candidate Masters (CM) Omran Al Hosani and Sultan Al-Zaabi, the highest-rated Emirati players in the tournament, hurdled their first-round assignments on Wednesday as the rest of the top-seeded players took off to a winning start in the 14th Dubai Juniors Chess Tournament – Sheikh Maktoum Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Cup at the Dubai Chess and Culture Club.

The seventh day of the IX Bilbao Grand Slam Masters Final has finished and Magnus Carlsen has taken one step closer to his third title in the tournament contended in Biscay’s capital.

GM Hovhannes Gabuzyan (Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture) and Adela Velikic (University of Belgrade) are the winners of the European Universities Chess Games, which were held in Zagreb/Croatia, 12-15 July in Pauk Hall.

Teams of Israel in Open section and Ukraine in Girl’s section are the winners of the European Youth Team U18 Chess Championship 2016, which was held in Celje, Slovenia. Both teams dominated the competition and well deserved triumphed.

In the Open event Israel defeated Austria in the final decisive round and won with 13 match points. Second place went to the first seed Hungary with 11 match points, while Ukraine came third with 9 match points.

Ding Liren and Alexander Grischuk are going to play a friendly match in Wenzhou, China, from 19-22 July 2016. The games are with classical time control and the prize fund is 30 000 USD, with 20 000 USD going for the winner of the match.

This is a second preparation match for Ding Liren. He recently played a similar format against Wesley So in Shanghai.

Nakamura stunned Carlsen at the start of Bilbao 2016, but Carlsen has reacted in a superb way. The loss was followed by three consecutive victories and a draw. One of those victories deserves special attention, as it is a preview of the World Chess Championship 2016 match with Karjakin.

The Eastman Gent Open 2016 takes place 16-20 July in Ghent. It is a 9 rounds Swiss tournament with a prize fund of 6625 eur.
